Whitney Raymond is the co-owner of Good Medicine Beauty Lab, based out of the southwest Utah desert. The skincare company started with Whitney’s grandmother and has been passed down to the women in the family. Whitney accredits her knowledge to the inspiring women she’s met throughout her journey in the business. If she is not working or dreaming up skincare potions, Whitney is gardening, reading, playing with her dogs, and doing projects around the home. Whitney is a lover of nature and her desert home, from where she gathers ingredients for skin-healing products that emphasize natural beauty.
How did you get into your job?
I started working with my aunts, who were the owners of Good Medicine at the time, when I was 15. I found it fascinating and have stuck with it for over 20 years.
What does "beauty" mean to you?
Beauty to me is something that glows within, and caring for yourself is the best way to brighten your glow. Everyone is beautiful for different reasons, but beauty resides in us all. I think happiness shines the brightest, so when we are happy with ourselves, we become attractive to the world.
What does your typical work day involve?
As a small business owner, everyday brings something different and unexpected. In general, I check in on my team to make sure they have everything they need from me. I often check in on our customers and answer all customer service and business emails. Every day, I check on our inventory, and decide what needs to be made, bottled, and labeled by hand–my favorite part!
What is unique about your business?
I think it is unusual to find a skincare company that is multi-generationally owned and operated by women. We were making natural skincare products and using essential oils way before it was a trend. Our formulas are tried and true. Another aspect of our business that is unique is that we make all of our products in our beauty lab. We do not outsource the making, bottling, or shipping of our products.
What do you value most about your skin-healing products?
I think the desert-born aspect is really special. There is just something healing and magical aboutthe desert and I think that translates into the indigenous plants that we infuse into a lot of our products. Our desert tincture is a powerhouse of plant medicine. The harsh environment that desert plants can thrive in is remarkable. The ability of the plants to retain moisture and repel any encroaching plants that threaten their life source is truly amazing, and these same, powerful properties manifest in our skincare. Good Medicine is for the skin and for the soul.
