What’s the last great book you read?

I recently reread one of my favorite books of all time—Linda Howard’s SON OF
THE MORNING. It’s an older title with a copyright of 1997, so the technology is
dated, but the story definitely stands the test of time. I absolutely love this
book.

What do you read when you’re working on a book? And what kind of reading
do you avoid while writing?

I mostly read historical romance when I’m actively writing. For me, reading is entertainment, escape, and relaxation. Historical romance is so different from what I’m working on daily that it provides the perfect getaway. I don’t necessarily avoid any genre when I’m working. I will read women’s fiction if one of my favorite authors has a new release. I’m just drawn to other worlds for my pleasure reading.

Who is your favorite fictional hero or heroine?

Ooh, I have so many. I love Harry Dresden in Jim Butcher’s series. I adore Patricia Briggs’ Mercy Thompson. I particularly love Andy Carpenter in the series by David Rosenfelt. I will mention I listen to these titles in audiobook, and the narrators have given these characters life for me.

What kind of reader were you as a child?

I was a voracious reader. Our elementary school library was open in the summer and I volunteered there every day. I’d ride my bike to school and spend a few hours shelving books and reading to the preschoolers for story time. On slow days, I’d sit in the floor and read. It was heaven! I fell in love with reading then.

Have you ever changed your opinion of a book based on information about the author, or anything else?

I won’t say that I’ve changed my opinion about a book—the work should stand on its own. However, I have had my enjoyment of a story ruined by the actions of the book’s author. I read fiction for pleasure and escape. When an author inserts his politics into either the story or his promotion of a book, I find that off-putting. Even if I tend to agree with the political opinion. I believe fiction should sweep the reader into another world. I don’t want to
drag this one along for the ride.

Is there a genre you’d like to try your hand at writing that is new to you?

I’d love to write a children’s book. I have a story floating in my mind that would be a companion to one of my Eternity Springs series books. Children’s books are hard to do!

 What are you working on now?

I’m writing the third book in my Lake in the Clouds women’s fiction trilogy. I don’t have a title for it yet. Book 2, BALANCING ACT, comes out in November.

Of all the books you’ve written, do you have a favorite?

No, but I have a favorite recurring character. Celeste Blessing is a recurring character in my Eternity Springs series. I love her because she has resonated with readers and they adore her. That’s so gratifying for me!

What will we see from you next?

I have an Eternity Springs novella coming August 7th. MISTLETOE MINE has previous been available digitally, but I have updated the story and it will be released for the first time in digital, print, and audio formats. The fabulous Andy Arndt narrated the story.
