Hilary Walker was born in Hertford, England. She’s a rabid horse lover and owner, so her non-denominational Christian novels are heavily populated with equines.

But her spiritual director told her, “Your mission is to tell the truth; people need to hear the truth!” and so the plot for the first book of ‘A Modern Catholic Trilogy’ was born. Intended as a standalone, it was followed by two more novels, because readers kept asking what happened next to the characters. The trio of books highlight the clash between traditional Catholic teaching and its compromised modern equivalent. They also seek to show the richness of the true Catholic Faith.

Hilary is a multiple Amazon best selling author and lives in South Carolina with her husband and her English bulldog, Bertie Wooster’s Jeeves.

Are there any classic novels that you only recently read for the first time?

‘Lord of the World’ by Father Benson. Published in 1908, it is remarkably ahead of its time, although even my elderly spiritual director admits to finding the ending hard to understand, as do I.

Two months ago, I finally read George Orwell’s ‘Animal Farm' and was upset that the horse dies in the end.

Do you read when you’re working on a book?

My go-to resource for outlining a story is ‘Take Off Your Pants’ by Libbie Hawker. A wonderfully concise book, it helps me create tight plots with no extraneous fluff, and has led to many best sellers.

I also read background material for each novel. But once I’ve prepared a detailed outline, I prefer to be ‘in the zone’ and not be influenced by the writing style of other authors.

What genres do you especially enjoy reading?

I love Catholic fiction but not many authors write it. To improve my knowledge of the Faith, I read non-fiction by notable figures in the traditional Catholic Church, books on writing, and, of course, equestrian books!

What books are you embarrassed not to have read yet?

George Orwell’s ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four,’ because I know I’ll find it depressing. I had enough trouble with ‘Animal Farm.’

What kind of reader were you as a child? 

Voracious. I spent all my spare time sitting in the attic with pony stories and longing for the day when I could have a pony of my own. My father took the TV away, as he wasn’t happy about the quality of programmes, and thought I would buy the classics with the book money he gave me. But instead, I acquired an impressive library of horse fiction and non-fiction. And, yes, I did finally get my pony!!

Why did you choose your genre?

I also pen non-denominational Christian romances, but writing contemporary Catholic Fiction comes more naturally to me. However, the genre is very sparsely populated, especially by living authors. I think there’s a timidity among writers who are Catholic, but don’t want to turn off potential readers by being overtly so. Yet interestingly, my purely Catholic books are by far the most popular. Which suggests a need for more novels in this genre.

What do you hope to achieve through your writing?

My goal is to bring attention to the plight of truth in the world today. I hope to encourage people not to be led astray by Satan’s lies, but to hold fast to Jesus, Who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. In short, I want to save souls.

How long does it take you on average to write a novel?

Three to four months. Although my last romance, ‘Rachel’s Risk,’ was ¾ finished and left for three years before I picked it up again after writing the Modern Catholic Trilogy.

Do you write every day?

If I don’t write every day I get depressed. If I get to write for four hours or more in a row, I’m in heaven!

What are you working on now?

A rather ambitious novel combining Catholicism and horses. My aim, as always, is to entertain, but also to prepare the reader for a cosmic event foretold to come before the end of the world.
